Experience Eritrea’s 9 Tribes: A Nomad Journey to Change Your Life

Are you ready for a deep, joy-filled adventure that will leave your feet dusty and your soul transformed?

Whether you’re a curious traveler in your 20s or a seasoned explorer in your 60s, if you can handle long walks on rocky, sandy, or hilly terrain—and you’re willing to trade some comfort for deeper connection—this journey is for you.

Join us for a 3–5 week Nomad Experience across Eritrea, where you’ll live among the country’s nine indigenous peoples—known as the biherat—and discover what it means to travel slowly, live simply, and build relationships that last a lifetime.

What You’ll Experience

  • Travel alongside nomads from the Tigre, Afar, Saho, Bilen, Beja (Beni-Amer), Kunama, Nara, Tigrinya, and Jeberti peoples

  • Sleep under the stars in nomad tents or huts—and occasionally rest in a hotel with soft beds and hot showers

  • Hike daily through dunes, hills, and villages—learning the rhythm of life on foot

  • Take a boat ride with Beja fishermen, if season and sea allow—exploring river deltas or Red Sea islands

  • Eat what locals eat—from injera and zigni to fresh goat, camel milk, or grilled fish (and always plenty of coffee)

  • Learn greetings and customs in multiple local languages—guided by hosts proud to share their stories

  • Gather at nightfires, sharing stories, laughter, music, and tea with elders, shepherds, and nomadic families

  • Discover cities too—Asmara, Keren, or Massawa—between countryside experiences

Travel Timing & National Holidays

Eritrea observes several national holidays that may affect travel permits outside Asmara and a few other always-open cities. We usually avoid these dates to ensure the most immersive rural experience.

But if you’d prefer to witness one of these national festivals or commemorations—even if it means staying closer to the capital—that’s your call. Just know that travel may be limited during:

  • Orthodox Christmas – 7 Jan

  • Timket – 19 Jan

  • Independence Day – 24 May

  • Martyrs’ Day – 20 June

  • Meskel – 27 Sept

  • Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha – dates vary by lunar calendar

We’ll help you decide what timing best suits your goals and work with local partners to ensure a smooth journey.

Who Should Come?

  • Adventurous walkers who enjoy rugged terrain, remote camps, and discovering on foot

  • Cultural explorers eager for genuine connection, not just photo ops

  • Respectful learners who value being hosted in unfamiliar cultures

  • Soul searchers looking for something deeper than a vacation

What’s Included

  • Local guides and cultural hosts

  • All in-country transport and permits

  • Lodging (mostly rural tents or huts, with occasional hotel stays)
